What are plant sterols?

Plant sterols are compounds that have similar structure to cholesterol and naturally found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and cereals

What is the benefit of ActiCol® in Nestlé Omega Plus?

2 servings of Nestlé Omega Plus ActiCol contains 1.2g of plant sterol, which is scientifically proven to help lower cholesterol (Thomsen et al, 2004). ActiCol® refers to plant sterol that has similar structure to cholesterol. It reduces absorption of cholesterol from small intestine into the body.

How long does it take to see the results?

Study shown that consumption of 1.2g – 1.6g of plant sterols per day (in milk) over 4 weeks reduced the LDL-cholesterol level, in mildly hypercholesterolemic subjects, by 7% and 10% respectively (Thomsen et al, 2004).

I do not have any cholesterol issue. Can I consume Nestlé Omega Plus ActiCol?

Yes, Nestlé Omega Plus ActiCol can be taken as part of a healthy diet as the plant sterols work by blocking the cholesterol absorption in the gut. The nutritious beverage is also high in Calcium to help strengthen your bones and is designed with a healthy fat blend that is low in saturated fat and zero trans fat to protect your heart.

I am on statin medication for high cholesterol. Can I still consume plant sterols?

Yes, according to studies, plant sterols can be safely consumed on a daily basis by people who are currently on statin medication for high cholesterol. This is because the mode of action for cholesterol lowering is different – plant sterols work at the gut level where cholesterol is absorbed whereas statin medication targets the liver where cholesterol is produced. Should you have any specific health concerns, it is recommended that you consult a doctor/dietitian for further advice before consumption.

What is the daily recommended serving for Nestlé Omega Plus ActiCol?

The recommended intake is 2 servings per day to effectively reduce blood cholesterol. However, the level of reduction may vary among individuals.

What happens if I take more than 2 servings/day of Nestlé Omega Plus ActiCol? Are there any side effects?

There are no negative side effects from consuming more than the recommended 2 servings a day. However, evidence suggests that intake of > 3g of plant sterol in a day is unlikely to provide additional benefit in lowering cholesterol. To ensure a balanced and varied diet that meets nutritional needs, we recommend a daily intake of 2 servings of Nestlé Omega Plus ActiCol together with a healthy diet that is also rich in fibre (from fruits, vegetables & whole grains) to help manage cholesterol levels.

Is Nestlé Omega Plus ActiCol suitable for diabetics?

Nestlé Omega Plus ActiCol is designed with zero added sugar. However, it contains carbohydrate which will be broken down into simple sugar for absorption. The recommended carbohydrate intake (which includes sugars) for diabetic may vary. It would be best for individuals to consult a doctor/dietician before purchasing or consumption.

I have lactose intolerance. Can I take Nestlé Omega Plus ActiCol?

Nestlé Omega Plus ActiCol is a milk-based product and contains lactose. It may not be suitable for lactose intolerant individuals.
